Recovery
Recovery from Morton’s Nerve Decompression:
The typical healing time is about 8-12 weeks. Some people take longer some take less. This can be as quick as 6 weeks or as long as 6 months. If you have more than one done at a time on the same foot, it will be on the longer side. You will be in a surgical show or boot after the surgery for 4-6 weeks or you can wear an orthopedic sandal. The first 2 weeks you need to be as sedentary as you can BUT you can put full weight on it immediately. Around 6 weeks you can usually become much more active. Physical therapy can help and starts after 1 week if possible.
Recovery from Stump Neuroma Surgery:
No weightbearing for 4 weeks. Typical time to heal to the point where you feel comfortable walking in a shoe is about 3-4 months on average. Some take 6-12 months. You will be followed for six months and will require a healthcare person to remove stitches and need to monitor in coordination with Dr. Bregman.
What happens if decompression fails?
So, if you had a decompression by someone who was well trained to do it what next? Well, you can live with it or have a neurectomy. The neurectomy can be done from the top or bottom and will depend on the surgeon’s preference. The recovery typically takes 2-3 months for the decompression and should not be considered a success until 6 months as a Stump Neuroma can take that long to occur. Other options are a peripheral nerve stimulator.
